My Camera for Outdoor & Adventure Photography

As an outdoor photographer, my gear needs to be just as rugged and versatile as the landscapes I capture. After years of shooting in all kinds of environments — I’ve found that the Canon EOS R6 fits my style of photography perfectly. It’s reliable, lightweight, and adaptable to whatever nature throws my way. Since becoming a photographer, Canon has been my brand of choice. I learned on a Canon EOS Rebel T6, upgraded to a Canon 5D mark II (which I absolutely adored), and then moved to the Canon EOS R6.

The biggest bummer, if it really can be called that, was that the previous Canon lenses had the EF mount, but the new Canon mirrorless series had the RF mount. I wasn't financially able to switch to the RF lens ecosystem but that was easily remediated by purchasing an EF-RF lens adapter so I could continue using my older lenses. I haven't noticed any significant differences in speed or performance while using that, so I'm content to continue doing that for the foreseeable future.

Since purchasing the R6 in 2023, I've purchased a few RF lenses that have been pretty useful in certain shoots. I'll have a separate post on lenses though, so just you wait.

Why the Canon EOS R6 Works for Me

Over the years, I’ve used different cameras, but the Canon EOS R6 stands out for a few key reasons:

1. Great in Low Light

Sunsets, campfires, the Milky Way, and early morning hikes often create the best moments to capture. The R6 handles low light well, letting me keep shooting without losing too much detail or needing extra gear.

2. Quick & Reliable Focus

In the outdoors, things can move fast—wildlife, kids, changing light, even the wind. The R6 makes it easy to grab sharp, in-focus shots without worrying about missing the moment.

3. Lightweight & Easy to Carry

When I’m hiking or traveling, every ounce matters. The R6 is powerful without being bulky, making it easy to bring along no matter how long the hike.

4. Great for Video Too

While photography is my main focus, I also capture video for brands and personal projects. The R6 gives me smooth, high-quality footage without needing a ton of extra equipment.

A Camera is Only as Good as You Know How to Use It

Photography isn’t just about the gear—it’s about knowing how to use it. If you’ve ever felt lost switching out of auto mode, I’ve been there! That’s why I created my photography workshop, where I help people get comfortable shooting in manual mode. Understanding your camera can completely change the way you shoot, helping you get the images you’ve always wanted.
